French Back-to-School Vocabulary: Classroom Supplies

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year . . .”  Remember that Back-to-School commercial for Staples, the office supply store? Dad is skipping along to the holiday tune, happily shopping for school supplies.  Meanwhile the kids follow with long, morose faces.  Hilarious!  Just to prove you can find anything on the internet, here is my favorite commercial from 1996:

Though I don’t look forward to the kids going back to school that much, I do love shopping for school supplies.  There’s nothing like the smell of fresh crayons and new erasers.  Ahhhh!  As you’re perusing the ads and checking off the school supply list, learn these classroom objects in French:

  • le crayon – pencil
  • la gomme – eraser
  • le crayon de couleur – crayon
  • le stylo – pen
  • le livre – book
  • le classeur – binder
  • le cahier – notebook
  • le papier – paper
  • la colle – glue
  • les ciseaux – scissors
  • le règle – ruler
  • le sac-à-dos – backpack
  • la trousse – pencil case
  • I’ll be back with more languages for school supplies as the big day approaches.  Happy Back-to-School shopping!
