Go Away Big Green Monster! . . . and Teach French and Spanish Body Parts

One of my favorite children’s books is Ed Emberley’s Go Away Big Green Monster (LB Kids, 1993.)  There’s no better time than the month of October to pull out this fun story and introduce kids to body parts vocabulary in French and Spanish.

Last Thursday, I read Va-t’en Grand Monstre Vert to my preschool students.  Then the kids begged for me to read it again on Friday.  They absolutely love yelling at that monster to GO AWAY and LEAVE —-body part by body part.  What an empowering book.  Nice colors review, too.

Here are some of the French and Spanish words your kids will discover:

eyes —-les yeux (French), los ojos (Spanish)

nose—-le nez (French), la nariz (Spanish)

mouth—-la bouche (French), la boca (Spanish)

hair—-les cheveux (French), el cabello (Spanish)

ears—-les oreilles (French), las orejas (Spanish)

I’ve always loved to teach body parts with a Halloween theme.  Besides monsters, you can also build jack-o-lantern faces and label skeletons.  And pre-Halloween excitement requires that kids get the wiggles out with Simon Says, the Hokey Pokey, and Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes . . . all with a little holiday twist.

At Foreign Language House, we’ve compiled our favorite Halloween body parts activities into fun French and Spanish e-books.

Spanish Body Parts Halloween Fun

Spanish Body Parts Fall Festival Fun (for those who do not celebrate Halloween)

French Body Parts Halloween Fun (available as either a paperback or a download)

French Body Parts Fall Festival Fun (paperback or download, Halloween-alternative)

These are the ultimate guides for teaching French and Spanish body parts, prepared especially for the spooky month of October. Learning is fun with vocabulary games, songs, and other seasonal activities. In fact, you’ll find 18 different activities in this little Halloween treat, including 6 eye-catching, colorful handouts ready to just print and go. Don’t teach body parts without these spook-taculaire ideas . . .

. . . or without the Big Green Monster :-)
