Motivate High School French and Spanish Learners with Yabla

I just introduced my high school French students to Yabla.  Yabla is this really cool online video program for French and Spanish learners.  You watch current news, entertainment, or music videos in the target language with subtitles.  There’s an interactive dictionary, and even “back” and “slow” buttons.  After watching the videos, students play a pretty challenging fill-in-the-blank game.

I assigned the first two videos on Friday and gave over a week to reach a particular point goal.  Can you believe that over 25 students finished over the weekend?  They reported that they needed to play the game a minimum of 5 times for each video in order to reach the designated goal (points), and that it was pretty hard.  Yet, they worked willingly over the weekend when they didn’t have to.  Do you know what this means to a high school teacher?  I’m sooooooo thrilled!!!

Whether you teach French or Spanish in a high school or you’re an adult learner, you will LOVE Yabla.  Go check out the free trials.

I’ll tell you more about the cool teacher features in a future post.

Merci, Yabla.  Je vous aime :-)  Or as my son would say, you rock!
