Online Spanish Learning Program for Kids

Published on January 23, 2009 by in Spanish

My 6 year old has a new favorite web site! We just discovered Foreign Language Friends, an online Spanish learning program. Not only is it fun, but language is introduced in a natural, effective way. Here’s how it works: First, you choose the theme you want your child to explore. Currently, there are shapes, body parts, colors, transportation, zoo animals, family, and food. Every other week, a new theme will be added.

Kids begin with the Vocab Builder. Language is introduced clearly with animated images and time to repeat. This is exactly how I would begin a language lesson in the classroom, btw. Next, kids progress naturally to a listening comprehension activity in which they see two pictures and click on the one that they hear. A matching game follows (my boy’s favorite!) But my favorite part is a full-immersion animated cartoon using vocabulary from the theme. My little guy (age 3) was extremely attentive through three animated stories the other night. Very cute, and exactly the right way to learn language–in context! There’s a song with subtitles so you can sing along, a spelling section, and printable coloring pages.

Too often, online games are no more than drill and practice.  It’s refreshing to see an online program that presents language contextually, addresses different learning styles, and teaches all four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  Once kids have received instructions for a section in English, they begin a full-immersion activity. I love all of the Spanish praise: Fantastico, Muy Bien, etc. My kids were repeating those expressions, too. Of all the products I’ve reviewed for Foreign Language Fun, this is the one that my kids enjoy the most.

Monthly subscriptions are $9.95, or you can save some money and pay $99 for the year. Totally worth it! Soon, Foreign Language Friends will also offer their learning games in French and Chinese.

I highly recommend Foreign Language Friends :-) Go check it out!
