Der Osterhase: The Easter Bunny in German

Ever wonder where the Easter Bunny came from?  A little hopping around the internet lead me to the answer:  17th century Germany.  According to tradition, the bunny decorates eggs and hides them around the garden for good children.  German immigrants brought the custom to the United States in the 1700′s.  It wasn’t until the 1800′s that the famous chocolate Easter bunnies appeared.  (Anyone know how to say “Yummy” auf Deutsch?)  In German, the Easter Bunny is called . . .

der Osterhase

And to wish someone a happy Easter in German, say . . .

Frohe Ostern!

In German “yummy” is “Lecker” and can also be used in a formal setting to mean “delicious” or “good tasting”.
