French Vocabulary for Bastille Day
Happy Bastille Day! On July 14, the French celebrate their national holiday with parades and fireworks. (But they don’t call it Bastille Day, we Americans do. Anyone know why??)
I wrote a post last year with lots of fantastic ideas and links for Bastille Day coloring pages, crafts, activities, and food. This year, I thought I’d add a few useful vocabulary words for this patriotic celebration:
July 14 – le quatorze juillet
National holiday – la Fête Nationale
Flag – le drapeau
The tricolor (French) flag – le tricolore
Fireworks – les feux d’artifice
Parade – le défilé
Liberty, Equality, Fraternity – Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité
The French National Anthem – la Marseillaise
Speaking of la Marseillaise, here’s an instrumental clip to get you into the spirit:
And you might like this video about France’s calvary preparing for the traditional parade, or this one about the Bastille Day waiter’s race at Harvard Square in Cambridge.
Whatever you call July 14, I hope you have a great one!
