Let’s Talk About Zakumi in French and Spanish: The World Cup 2010 Mascot
A jolly, green-haired leopard named Zakumi is the official mascot of the 2010 FIFI World Cup in South Africa. The ZA in his name stands for South Africa, and KUMI means “ten” in various African languages. Find out more about Zakumi by visiting this page of the official FIFA website. Go to the top toolbar to choose your language (English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, or Arabic.)
Here’s a short reading/writing activity you can do with your language learners.
- Read this page about Zakumi.
- Print out this Zakumi worksheet in English, French, or Spanish.
- Draw a picture of Zakumi in the middle of the soccer ball.
- On each of the other five sections of the soccer ball, write one word in the target language that tells about Zakumi: descriptive adjectives, what he likes, where he’s been, what he wants, etc.
