Use Art to Learn Numbers in a Foreign Language

I was reading French books to my preschooler at bedtime tonight.  One of our favorites is a picture book called Je découvre les nombres dans l’art (I Discover Numbers in Art) by Lucy Micklethwait.  Each page contains the print of a famous piece of artwork.  Readers have to search for a particular item in each painting.  One fly, three fish, etc.  What outstanding counting practice for numbers 1-20!

Although nothing beats cuddling with my little guy looking at art and counting in French, I’ve used this book in the classroom, too.  I would choose one volunteer to come up and point to the items as the rest of the class counted together out loud.  My particular edition is no longer in print, but you can find similar art books by the same author here:
(Titles are in English, but can easily be used by a teacher or parent in any language.)

And here are some titles easily available in Spanish and French:

Descubre El Mundo de La Pintura (Spanish Edition)

Ou est le chat

If you prefer to use artwork exclusively from the target culture, gather your own set of prints and develop counting activities (or colors or animals or food or more!)  What a great way to expose children to culture!
