You don’t have to speak Spanish to love this.  Enjoy!

I made up this simple French Mother’s Day song to the tune of “Bonjour mes amis.”  It’s just right for pre-k and early elementary learners.  Wouldn’t this be a charming song for the children to sing to Mom?  And they can learn gardening vocabulary as they plant a flower for Maman, or prepare some delicious chocolate croissants!

Feliz Día de la Madre!  Happy Mother’s Day!

I love using poetry with my students, and I have a favorite French Mother’s Day poem to share with you today.  I hope you find it as charming as I do:

Des milliers d’étoiles dans le ciel – Millions of stars in the sky

Des milliers d’oiseaux dans les arbres – Millions of birds in the trees

Des milliers de fleurs au jardin – Millions of flowers in the garden

Des milliers d’abeilles sur les fleurs – Millions of bees on the flowers

Des milliers de coquillages sur les plages – Millions of shells on the beaches

Des milliers de poissons dans les mers – Millions of fish in the seas

Et seulement, seulement, une mère – And only, only one mother

This poem  just begs to be artistically interpreted!  I created a template for a mini-book so that students can illustrate each line, then assemble the pages into a book for Maman.  It’s available here.  And here’s a PowerPoint to help you present the poem while conveying the meanings.

If there’s one thing that makes Mommy’s heart melt, it’s a homemade treasure presented on Mother’s Day.  Help your French and Spanish students create a unique bilingual greeting card for Mom, Grandma, a favorite aunt, or a special friend.  The latest downloads from Foreign Language House each include a detailed handout of Mother’s Day greetings, sayings, and quotes in French or Spanish.   You’ll also find an assortment of printable card templates for students to color and decorate.

French learners can choose to celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May as we do in the U.S., or on the last Sunday in May as the French do.

As a teacher, I try my best to be sensitive to the diverse family situations of my students.  I offer an array of suggestions for honoring any special Mom-figure.  And high school teachers, don’t feel that your students are too old for the crayons and markers.  The quotes are appropriate for secondary learners, and believe me—you’ll never see more appreciative recipients of a homemade card than those courageous women raising teenagers!
