Play with words in English, French, Spanish, or any other world language.  Poetry is emotional, personal, creative, and communicative.  It is also a powerful vehicle for internalizing new words and expressions in a foreign language. As Robert Frost wrote, “Poetry is what gets lost in translation.”

Even the youngest of novice learners can write basic target language poetry. When students learn that poetry doesn’t have to rhyme, be intricate, or use “fancy words,” they warm up quickly to the idea. Teaching poetry units can be the most fun and freeing of classroom experiences. Look at target language poetry as word-experience for the students with some experimentation.
